Light Horse Park

The park is an oasis of gentle hills and rugged terrain which borders Seymour. The area provides great opportunities for a variety of outings, picnics, power walking, mountain bike riding, walking the dog, or simply just enjoying the native flora and fauna which prevails. The area covers 150 hectares and was the large Army base that became known as Site 17. The history of the site goes back to 1887 when the Seymour troop of the Victorian Mounted Rifles was formed. Members of the VMR traveled from distant towns to interact in military training, their men and the horses being transported by rail. They alighted at Seymour and made their way to the site.

After federation, the VMR became part of the reorganized Light Horse. The site contains the remnants of many of the buildings that dotted the area, Hospital 27, a grenade range and man-made water courses to divert rain runoff as well as the sewerage system. The park is open seven days a week and is always undergoing improvements.
